What Is ROI in Sports Betting and How Do You Calculate It Correctly?

4 September 2026 · By TipsKings Admin

ROI, or Return on Investment, is one of the most useful indicators for evaluating whether a betting project is growing. It measures the profit or loss in relation to the initial bankroll assigned to the project. It should not be confused with yield, which measures efficiency per amount staked.

1. The ROI Formula

The basic formula is:

ROI (%) = (Net profit / Initial bankroll) × 100

If you start with €1,000 and finish with €1,120 after the period, your net profit is €120 and your ROI is 12%.

2. What Does ROI Measure?

ROI measures the change in the original budget. It answers a financial question: how much has the capital allocated to betting grown or declined? It is useful for reviewing a month, a quarter or a complete season.

ROI depends on stake sizing and money management. Two analysts can have the same yield but different ROI if they use different bankrolls, stakes or reinvestment rules.

3. ROI vs Yield

  • Yield: net profit divided by total amount staked. It evaluates efficiency per euro placed.
  • ROI: net profit divided by the initial bankroll. It evaluates growth of the starting capital.

Neither metric guarantees future results. A short period can be distorted by variance, large prices or an unusually successful run.

4. Example with Different Stakes

Suppose a €500 starting bankroll produces €50 net profit after several weeks. ROI is 10%. If €1,000 was staked during that period, yield is 5%. Both figures describe the same results from different angles.

5. How to Use ROI Responsibly

Record every stake, return, result and commission consistently. Separate the initial bankroll from later deposits and withdrawals, and define the period being measured. Do not use ROI to justify increasing stakes after losses.

Conclusion

ROI is a useful measure of bankroll growth, while yield is more suitable for comparing betting efficiency. Use both alongside a clear record of results, a realistic sample and responsible limits. Past ROI is not a promise of future profit.
